Web-based software
Web-based software is an application that runs on a central server and is accessed through a web browser. Unlike desktop software, which must be installed locally, web-based software lets users access services with nothing more than an internet connection, independent of their operating system or hardware.
This type of software is usually designed with a multi-tier architecture that includes:
Presentation layer: runs in the user’s browser and displays the user interface. It is built with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and frameworks such as React.js or Angular.
Application logic layer: runs on the server and is built with languages such as Python (Django/Flask), PHP (Laravel), Java (Spring Boot) or Node.js. It processes requests and manages interaction with the database.
Data layer: stores and retrieves data, usually with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Redis.
Benefits of web-based software
- No installation: because the software runs on the server, all the user needs is a browser, reducing dependence on specific hardware.
- Centralized updates: updates happen only on the server, so every user always has the latest version and compatibility problems disappear.
Access anytime, anywhere: web-based software can be used over HTTPS from anywhere at any time, a big advantage for multi-branch organizations and remote teams.
Lower maintenance costs: no need to support multiple operating systems or local installations, reducing technical support costs.
Scalability: with cloud infrastructure and microservices, performance can be scaled without disrupting operation.
Strong security: JWT, OAuth2, web application firewalls (WAF) and real-time monitoring can give the software a high level of security.
What web-based software can do
Web-based software covers a wide range of functions. In organizations, it can serve as internal automation, resource management, customer engagement or information portals. Common uses include:
Web-based ERP systems: managing finance, HR, inventory and supply chain processes.
Online CRM systems: tracking customer interactions, sales and support.
Learning management systems (LMS): with uploading of learning content, exams and certificate issuance.
Project management software: such as Trello or Jira, which are web-based.
E-commerce platforms: such as online stores that serve customers through online payment gateways.
Our web-based software design services
Designing web-based software involves a set of activities carried out in phases. Our main services are:
1. Business analysis
Successful software starts with a deep understanding of business needs. In this stage, the business analyst meets with stakeholders, reviews existing processes, gathers documentation and analyzes operational data to identify problems and software requirements.
Deliverables:
Functional requirements document (FRD)
Business process models (BPMN)
Gap analysis
2. System architecture design
Software architecture is fundamental to a system’s stability, scalability, security and maintainability. In this stage, the system architect chooses the right architecture based on the type of project and its functional and non-functional requirements.
Key steps:
Choosing the type of architecture (for example monolith, MVC or microservices)
Defining the software layers (presentation, business logic, data)
Choosing the right technologies and frameworks (for example PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ)
3. User interface and user experience design (UX/UI)
Designers use tools such as Figma, Sketch or Adobe XD to create wireframes and prototypes of the software. A smooth user flow, colors, fonts, layout and accessibility are vital to the software’s success.
Deliverables:
Responsive design for mobile and desktop
Wireframes and interactive prototypes
A design system for developers
4. Front-end and back-end development
Implementation begins here. The front end is built with technologies such as React.js, Vue.js or Angular, and the back end with frameworks such as Node.js, Laravel (PHP) or Django (Python), covering business logic, data access and database communication.
Technical elements include:
RESTful APIs or GraphQL for client communication
Authentication and access control (Auth, ACL, OAuth)
Exception handling, logging and integration with external services
5. API integration
Most software today needs to connect to other services to work effectively. This stage covers developing and implementing APIs that connect to systems such as banks, payment gateways, CRM and ERP systems, messengers and SMS services.
Examples:
Connecting to bank gateways (ZarinPal, Pay.ir, Stripe)
Integrating SMS services (SMS.ir, Twilio)
Connecting to accounting software (such as Holoo and Sepidar)
6. Software testing
Quality is ensured through thorough testing. Every part of the software must be evaluated for functionality, security and user experience.
Types of testing:
Unit testing: checking that functions and classes work correctly
Integration testing: checking how system components interact
Security testing: finding vulnerabilities (SQL injection, XSS and more)
Performance and load testing: simulating thousands of concurrent users
User acceptance testing (UAT): confirming final functionality from the client’s point of view
7. Deployment and maintenance
After final approval, the software is deployed to production. This includes server setup (Linux, Windows), domain and SSL certificate configuration, resource monitoring and a plan for technical support and future upgrades.
Services at this stage:
Deployment on physical or cloud servers (such as AWS, Azure, DigitalOcean)
CI/CD for fast, secure updates
Error and log monitoring with tools such as Sentry and the ELK Stack
The role of AI in web-based software design
The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in web-based software is growing every day, and it has become a vital part of designing, developing, optimizing and improving web applications. Here are AI’s key roles in web-based software:
1. Better user experience through personalization
By analyzing user behavior data (such as clicks, searches, time on page and interactions), AI can intelligently suggest content, page layouts or products tailored to each user, making personalization automatic and continuous.
Example: recommendation systems on e-commerce, news and education websites.
2. Automated support and customer service
Chatbots and smart assistants based on NLP (natural language processing) can answer users’ questions automatically, solve common problems and provide a human-like interactive experience.
Benefit: a lighter workload for the support team and faster responses to users.
3. Behavioral data analysis and smart decisions
AI can analyze large volumes of user-generated data and identify behavior patterns, weak points in the user interface and system performance issues, helping the development team make data-driven decisions.
Example: identifying high-risk steps in the sign-up process and redesigning them.
4. Stronger security for web-based software
Machine learning algorithms can detect suspicious behavior in real time and identify and prevent attacks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting and brute-force attacks.
Use case: AI-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) for emerging cyberattacks.
5. Image and audio processing in web apps
In web applications that rely on images, video or audio, AI can be used for face recognition, optical character recognition (OCR), video analysis and speech-to-text.
Examples: smart learning systems, facial authentication and visual search engines.
6. Automated development and help for programmers
AI helps developers implement software faster and more accurately through code generation, autocompletion and automatic bug detection.
Example: using GitHub Copilot or Tabnine for faster, more accurate coding.
7. System performance management and server load prediction
AI can analyze server resource usage, response times and traffic load over time, intelligently predict load spikes and take action before a crisis occurs.
Result: greater stability, scalability and resource efficiency in the web architecture.
A technical, forward-looking view of web-based software
Web-based software design today uses modern technologies such as:
PWA (Progressive Web Apps): an experience similar to a mobile app, but on the web.
Serverless architecture: running code without managing servers directly, with AWS Lambda or Azure Functions.
Docker and Kubernetes: for deploying, scaling and distributing software services.
GraphQL: a flexible alternative to REST APIs.
CI/CD pipelines: for continuous deployment and automated DevOps processes.
These technologies show that the future of software development depends on agility, accessibility, strong security and real-time analysis.
