University of Tehran UTEPT Language Exam System

UTEPT is the University of Tehran’s English proficiency test and the only English proficiency test recognized for PhD admission, taken for doctoral admission and for faculty hiring and promotion. To run it in Iran and Iraq, the Language Testing Center of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures needed an independent system that works without error from registration to results. Karzaan Software Group designed and built that system.

From the EEC platform to its own site

UTEPT used to be part of the University of Tehran’s open education platform (EEC), which Karzaan also built. The records of 16 exam sessions, 9,257 paid registrations and 6,739 candidates were migrated from EEC to the new system, and payments still go through the EEC payment gateway.

Admin panel

• Exam types with a form builder: UTEPT Iran, UTEPT Iraq and a legal English test, each with its own registration form; a new exam is added without changing code.
• Exam sessions: sessions, admission card text, closing registration and per-session settings.
• Candidates: participant management, admission cards, score entry and reports.
• Bulk import: candidates loaded from an Excel file plus a zip of their photos, with a preview before saving.
• Permissions and audit log: separate access for every user to each section and each exam type, and every change recorded in an audit log.

Automatic marking with OMR

UTEPT is a paper-based test. The system prints a personal answer sheet with a QR code for every candidate; the scanned sheets are marked automatically through a seven-step process using an OMR web service, and the final score goes straight into the candidate’s record. Each exam type has its own print profile: the answer sheet language, the QR position and the exact offset of the bubbles, adjusted by dragging on a scanned image.

Candidate site and panel

The candidate site is designed right-to-left and fully responsive: a home page with a slider for each exam type, an exam mega menu, announcements, the steps to take the test and FAQs. Candidates sign in with a mobile number or email and a 5-digit one-time code, and see their next exam with a countdown, their latest score report, their score trend, the exam steps and their past exams in one place. Score report inquiry is designed in two ways: by national ID and candidate number for candidates, or by uploading the PDF score report for organizations.

Security

• Closed by default: every route in the panel is open only when it is explicitly registered with a specific permission.
• Data protection: MongoDB injection prevention, CSRF protection, state changes only through POST and a strict Content Security Policy (CSP).
• Candidate photos are served only through a controlled route, after a permission check.

Technology

An admin panel in PHP with the Yii2 framework, a MongoDB database, an interface built with Tailwind CSS and a Persian (Solar Hijri) calendar, a Next.js registration site and answer sheet marking through an OMR web service.
